Globe Battery (West Coast, N.Z.), Globe Hill Mine, Globe Hill Mining Company

Located at Globe Hill near Reefton, West Coast. Flourishing 1882-1896. Formed to work the new find of quartz on the Union Quartz Mining Company claim. The company was sold out to the London-based Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand in 1896. Later amalgamated with the Progress Mine to become the Globe-Progress Mine.

Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. Photographed by an unknown photographer Jack Lovelock's father, John, worked at the Globe Battery, and the family lived at Crushington until shortly after the birth of Jack Lovelock in 1910. Description: Victor Donald Rolleson born Kaumata, near Paeroa 1910. Family moved to Reefton 1912. Outlines family background - father a blacksmith by trade but worked at the Globe Hill Mining Company and later at the Scheelite mine at Wakamarina about 7 miles up the river from Canvastown. Describes miner's shack at Wakamarina, where family lived. Talks about: childhood; fire at Waiuta; religion; politics - father was director of The Grey River Argus for some years; mine work experience for 3 weeks before applying to join the Public Service and explains that it was the only alternative to mining in Reefton. Recalls commencing work with Customs Department in Westport at the age of 17 years. Describes the Custom House. Reference to Ken Smythe and Ken Bowden. Discusses: duties as a cadet; salary; bonded liquor, perks etc; shipping at Greymouth and Westport during Depression, mentions deserters from ships; importing before Import Licensing was introduced in 1938; changes in the Bond system; Collector's warrant and the introduction of Sales Tax. Recalls the story of the Great Brewery Fraud. Gives a description of the Murchison Earthquake 1929 and how it affected the Customs building. Description: View of the Globe Hill Mine near Inangahua, photographed by William Archer Price circa 1910. Shows the old Globe shaft. The old Globe shaft became known as the Progress Mines Ltd 'A' shaft after Consolidated Goldfields of NZ took over and combined the Globe and Progesss mines in 1896.
