Alexander, John Hood, 1916-1975

New Zealand artist and book illustrator. Author of Historic Wellington (Reed, 1959) and illustrator of Historic Bay of Islands (Reed, 1960). Born Christchurch, the son of art dealer George Alexander. Studied art for 18 months at Elam school of fine art, Auckland. Had a series of jobs in the North Island and left these in 1952 to work as an intinerant artist, supported with other positions from time to time. In 1959 he was working in the Library of the Maori Affairs Department in Wellington.

The view is taken from the front facade facing south, showing its picket fence, covered entranceway, steep pitched roof and the hills behind it.
