Description: The journal covers the period Sept 1869 to March 1872. It describes the breaking in and development of the Gubbins brothers' farm and comments on pioneering life in the Waikato. Part 2, p 17, 18 and part of p 28 are missing. It appears to have been transcribed in 1974 by E McDonald who also provides an introduction to the journal entitled `Mr Gubbins comes to Auckland in 1869 and buys a farm in the Waikato',which gives biographical details about Arthur Gubbins. Publication - Published in Auckland-Waikato Historical journal, nos 24, 25, 27 (Apr, Oct 1974, Oct 1975) Source of title - supplied title Gubbins and his brother Evans emigrated from Ireland to New Zealand and took up land at Ohaupo, south of Hamilton, in 1869. Description: The recollections contain an account of Oldham's experiences as a farmer, flax manufacturer and lay preacher. Includes an editorial note by the donor who retyped the recollections from an earlier typescript. Oldham was born and grew up in Nottingham. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1859 and initially farmed at Mangawai, Maungatroto and Paparoa in Northland. A Methodist lay preacher, he conducted services in this district before an official Methodist circuit was established. He became involved in the manufacture of flax matting and in ca 1880 moved to Tuakau in Waikato where he ran a flax factory for about 18 years before retiring to Auckland. Description: Four slab huts with raupo thatched roofs and slab chimneys in a clearing in New Zealand bush, with tree ferns and cabbage trees, as well as other large trees and dense bush in the background. There is a high rocky bluff to the right and tall hills in the background. Smoke is coming from the chimneys of the left- and right-most huts, there are steps leading to the central hut and the right-hand hut has a woman in a red skirt standing in the doorway. The top of the chimney for this last hut is formed by a barrel. Bush combined with rock formations suggest the Coromandel district, visited by Hoyte during the gold-mining era. The settlement is likely to be of semi-permanent miners' huts. Other Titles - Early settlers' camp.
