Marie Heron married Paetahi (Pat) Metekingi in 1943 (he died at Faenza in WWII). In 1954 married Jim Bell. She had a lifelong career in education, pioneering the free-play method of pre-schooling in New Zealand, co-founded Wellington's ground-breaking progressive school Matauranga in the Aro Valley, Wellington and gained a university doctorate in her 80s. They did all the work except for the hem, which was done by the infant mistress, Mrs H Sotiri. The project took four weeks.
