Description: Contains a diary written on a tour of Japan by William Tricklebank of Victoria University College, fullback and centre player from the 1935-1936 New Zealand Universities rugby team. The author of the diary records his train journey from Wellington to Auckland, then the team's voyage to Sydney and Brisbane aboard the `Aorangi'. He describes in detail the voyage from Australia via Hong Kong to Japan, where the team trains for rugby and learns to use chopsticks. Once in Japan his diary continues with details of the surroundings, tourist activities and rugby games the team plays. He also makes a summary of Japanese football, commenting on the grounds, crowds, referees, playing conditions and players. After a month in Japan, the author records the voyage back to New Zealand via Hong Kong, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thursday Island and Australia. Quantity: 1 volume(s). 0.02 Linear Metres. Description: The cartoon shows a bull, Ferdinand of Taranaki, a cow, Mooloo of Waikato, a sheep, Canterbury and a kiwi, the All Blacks, congratulating a New Zealand Universities rugby player. The New Zealand Universities player has a springbok slung over his shoulder and is raising his fist to show his might. Refers to the 1956 Springbok rugby tour of New Zealand. After defeating a number of provincial sides the Springboks were defeated for the first time on tour by the New Zealand universities team. The score was 22 - 15. Exhibited in 'Guts and Glory' an exhibition of rugby cartoons, organised by the New Zealand Cartoon Archive Trust in association with the Alexander Turnbull Library, National Library of New Zealand, at the National Library Gallery, 15 July - 7 November 1999, and then touring until 2001.
