Malcolm, Alexander Scott, 1864-1956

Convenor and secretary of the Clutha No-Licence League; teacher at Kelso School; stood unsuccessfully in 1899 for Parliament with prohibition as one of his major policies; Member of Parliament for Clutha, 1905-1922; foundation member of the South Otago Hospital Board and its chairman 1923-1926. He also played a leading role in the establishment of the South Otago High School which opened in 1926. From 1924-1931 he served on the Legislative Council. In 1893 he married Flora Jamieson Jack of Hokitika. (See `Southern people; a dictionary of Otago Southland biography', 1998)
