Correspondents include J D Hanning of the New Zealand Alpine Club, E H Peck (Office of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, New Delhi), G N Dutt (Geological Survey of India), Harry Stevenson (President of the New Zealand Alpine Club), R W Lloyd (Himalayan Joint Committee), C E J Crawford (The Himalayan Club), [Daniel?] Riddiford (D & R Beere & Co), and Sidar Pasang Lama. Also contains messages dictated by Eric Shipton. Telegrams regard entry to Nepal and press dispatches. Description: The collection includes a typed list of headings along with their NZAC negative numbers. The related prints, some duplicated, have their negative numbers on the reverse. These are of: men with pack horses next to the Waiatoto River; men on horseback fording the Waiatoto; landing cargo from a row boat at Bruce Bay and loading up a horse and cart; the Waiatoto River; horses swimming across the Blue River; part of the Haast Range including Stargazer and Moonraker taken from the shoulder of the Glacier Dome; the Eggelings homestead at Waiatoto; a group of Maori women and children in European dress at Bruce Bay ca 1910s; Mount Aspiring from Therma Glacier; an avalanche from the shoulder of Stargazer; Mount Aspiring from near Glacier Dome; Stargazer from the upper Waiatoto; and the view looking down the Waiatoto River from the Therma Glacier. Other photographs which are not on the list but some of which have original negatives in this collection are of a small group of soldiers staying in a mountain hut and camping at the foot of Aoraki/Mount Cook. One of them shows the men standing in a line in a clearing with their rifles, possibly on a military exercise. Also included is a photograph of cows in a field in the snow. Camping and mountaineering in Canterbury

Description: Views, mostly snapshots, many of which show a group of eleven men camping in the Cook River area circa 1920s, taken by unidentified photographers. Other images are very clear portraits, but neither the subjects nor the phtographers are identified. The views of the group camping show the men's arrival at the end of the road in buses and cars, prior to their pushing a trailer filled with camping equipment over a stoney river bed to the campsite, tents erected in bush settings, and several different mountain huts including one A-frame hut and two huts identified as the Havelock Hut and Ball Hut. Jack Pattle is identified as the photographer of the Havelock Hut (no. 29); Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann took photograph no. 30 which shows Jack Clarke, Dr Parker, Rev H E Newton and Billy Batson at Ball Hut in 1902 when they made the first crossing of Graham's Saddle in 1902 (identified from copies at the University of Canterbury). Photograph no. 37 shows a cartoon of "Bergschrund Bill" (possibly Bill Batson?). Photographs no. 31, 33, and 46 show a large group of men having a picnic at a mountain hut circa 1920s (possibly members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club); photographs 39, 40, 41 and 47 show men in military uniform about 1941. Nos 40 and 41 show a combimed reunion dinner of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and New Zealand Alpine Club members in the 2NZEF and RAF Middle East Forces, held Saturday July 26, 1941 at Kings Hotel, Cairo, while no. 39 shows an unidentified soldier and no. 47 is inscribed "All good wishes, John Simpson" presumably both members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club or the NZ Alpine Club. Mountain huts and mountaineering in the Southern Alps

Description: Snapshots of mountaineering, camping, and several unidentified mountain huts in the Southern Alps taken by unidentified photographers. The groups are probably members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and/or the New Zealand Alpine Club. Many of the scenes show men transporting building equipment (some with the use of vehicles and horses), then carried by the men across stoney river beds, fording rivers, climbing with planks on their backs, then showing the various stages of construction. One hut has a rounded roof-line; others made of corrugated iron and wood are situated at different sites, including one up a bare mountain-side, and one with trees behind, and another with a river in front. The collection includes several interior views of huts (nos. 130-134), and close-up pictures of the men. Names pencilled on the back of some of the photographs include F. Hulston, D.V. Apperley, W. Newton, G. Chisholm, M. Barford, John Sampson, J. Moore and R. Drake. Image no. 175 shows the tombstone of Minnie Cochran with the inscription "In memory of Minnie Cochran, d 27th Oct. 1879 and Baby" which was found "nestling under the hawthorn fence by the cattle yards at Mt White". Discusses starting a BSc at Victoria University of Wellington and work in a scientific laboratory. Discusses the Hutt Valley Tramping Club and the Tararua Tramping Club, where she met her future husband. Discusses marriage and children, and having to work after the death of her husband. Recalls mountaineering in the South Island and rock climbing. Describes attitude to women climbers, and the usefulness of belonging to clubs. Discusses lack of nutritional knowledge in the 1950s, and the techniques and equipment used, particularly the introduction of crampons. Discusses becoming a climbing instructor, and a film that was made about her climbing the Pinnacles. Recalls traverse of Mt Cook. Recalls social activities of tramping and climbing clubs. Discusses membership of New Zealand Alpine Club (NZAC). Discusses dangers involved in climbing. Explains importance of National Parks being made more accessible. Recalls joining the Canterbury University Tramping Club, and various trips around the South Island. Also joined the New Zealand Alpine Club. Discusses social aspects of this club, and friendships made. Moved back to Wellington and taught at Hutt Valley High School. Discusses working for retired school master, Mr W A Kennedy, a well known mountaineer and photographer, and getting interested in mountaineering. Talks about Kennedy's photography and her own photography. Recalls climbing Avalanche Peak and Mount Rolleston in 1939 with Jim Estall and Bert Esquilant. Describes other climbs and her accident at De La Beche when she was taken to Christchurch. Refers to Christopher Johnson who got help. Describes first trip after accident with Bill Vaughan and Jim Estall. Recalls being in a hut with Elva Cox during big earthquake in the 1940s.
