McCurdie, William Duncan Ross, 1857-1948

Surveyor and enginéer. Born near Ayr, Scotland. Emigrated to New Zealand 1880, where he first worked on a survey party in Taranaki. Surveyed in Catlins River Bush district from mid 1880s until 1898. Foundation member of NZ Institute of Surveyors. [Source: Furkert, "Early New Zealand Enginéers", pp 209-210; The Pionéer land surveyors of NZ / C A Lawn (qMS-1138)]. Husband of Olga McCurdie, and father of Rhoda McWhannell (née McCurdie), and William (Bill) McCurdie. Mr and Mrs McCurdie celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on 22 December 1941. Built the seawall at St Clair, when city enginéer (see photograph of St Clair Beach in McWhannell Album 3 (PA1-o-552, [p.14]).

Description: Family photographs relating to the McCurdie family. Many are groups of friends and family, some of whom are identified with both Christian and surnames. These include wedding photographs of Marjorie Whitton who married J.W. Nicolls on March 31, 1921 at Oamaru, with Betty and Mary Whitton as bridesmaids. Several views of homes include Woodcroft (the home of Dr John Kinder), Werneth (a house at Atawhai, Nelson), The Moorings (the home of W. & Lucy Churchward at Springlands, Blenheim), and Stonycroft (home of Mr & Mrs Free, at Masterton). One view is of snow in Christchurch city in July 1918, and one shows decorations in the interior of Dunedin Hospital for the visit of the Prince of Wales in May 1920. Description: Family photographs relating to the family of Bill McCurdie (William J S McCurdie), the brother of Rhoda McWhannell. All the images were taken in England, Wales, and Madeira. They include a number of scenes at the christening of Sally Pat McCurdie, daughter of Bill and Inga McCurdie, at Clifford, West Yorkshire. Photographs of Sally Pat McCurdie range from babyhood at the christening, to a child of about 8, riding a horse. A few show Sally Pat's sister Kirstin. Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken in the South Island, except for one view of `Woodcroft', the home of Dr John Kinder in Arney Road, Remuera from about 1880 until his death in 1903. Many of the South Island views are related to early surveyors William Duncan Ross McCurdie and his wife Olga McCurdie, and Ernest Herbert Wilmot, who were surveying land near Tahakopa, Tautuku, McLennan Valley and the Catlins. Several show the homes of early settlers in the Tahakopa Valley. Of particular interest are a view of women voting at their first election at Tahakopa (28.11.1893); one of an early settler's first home at Tahakopa; the first boat sailing up to Mr McCurdie's camp; and a group of horsemen on a beach, parading before going to war (1914). Description: Collection of photographs, many of which were taken by Rhoda McWhannell. A number of photographs taken in 1976 were published in the Auckland Herald, one published in the Dominion (Wellington), probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell who had a strong interest in photography for many years. Scenes published in the newspapers include one of a team of six Clydesdale horses pulling a plough; one of black swans with their cygnets at the lake in Hamilton; one of a group of four children on a swing, and a young boy on a single swing; and one photograph entited "Happy days", with a Maori workman lying in in the sun in his wheelbarrow during `smoko' or tea-break, with a thermette, a billy and a mug beside him, reading a paper. Photographs of animals at the zoo, lions with cubs, koala bears and two hippopotamuses. Several images of royalty, with the Queen Mother at Hamilton, on her visit to New Zealand in 1958, and Princess Alexandra, visiting in 1971. Several photographs show brides and wedding parties, ranging from Dorothy Shires and Marjorie Nicolls, both married in 1920, to Joan and John McWhannell, married in 1953. A number of farming images, including those published in the Herald, include one of drovers' dogs "after completing four weeks trek with a large mob of cattle" in the Auckland area, mustering in the Craigieburn Range (Southern Alps), and new-born lambs (one a group of four black lambs, and one a white lamb).
