Description: Interviews recalling the career and work of Gordon Cunningham, an eminent New Zealand horticulturalist, plant pathologist and mycologist. Some interviewees recall Cunningham from when he became director in 1936 of the newly established DSIR, Plant Diseases Division in Mt Albert, Auckland. The new laboratory opened in 1939. Former colleagues recall his work on fruit tree diseases, particularly fungal rust; his setting up a timber preservation section, as well as a crop diseases subsection; helping establish a linen flax industry in the South Island. They discuss his significant work on identification and classification of fungi. Interviewees remember Cunningham's strong and complex personality, his independent outlook and his insistence on punctuality. They recall his industriousness and talk about their high regard for him as a scientist. Interviewees are: Geoffrey Baylis, Edward (Ted) Bollard, Shirley and Peter Brook, Joan Dingley, Beryl Kirkwood, Maisie Smith.
