Description: Chiefly photographs of the aftermath of the Tarawera eruption in 1886, many taken by Charles Spencer. Images include Dr Hector's party; views of mud-covered country; damage to buildings at the village of Te Wairoa; Henry Lundius and J C Blythe standing outside the hen-house in which several survivors took refuge; and views of the new lake formed after the eruption. Several views show the area before the eruption. The last two photographs in the album show the Manawatu Gorge bridge under construction, and the engine room at the Government Printing Office in Wellington. Description: Photographs taken after the Tarawera eruption in 1886 by members of Stephenson Percy Smith's survey team. Most of the images were taken by Charles Spencer, and some by George Dobson Valentine. Included are scenes of destruction at Te Wairoa, with McRae's Hotel, the old mill, the Mission Church, and a carved house. Members photographed include Charlie Turner (Charles Barker Turner), Ernest Feltus Adams, J C Blythe, Henry Lundius and W C [i.e. E C] Gold-Smith. Album includes a hand-printed index. Description: Remains of the stone house built in 1832 in Paihia for Bishop William Williams (1800-1878), photographed 11 May 1903 by Russell James Duncan. Source of descriptive information - Title and historical note from Library client. Inscriptions: Mount recto - above image - #90 Bay of Islands; Mount recto - beneath image - At Paihia. First stone house built in NZ - 1832 (see over); Mount verso - top centre - Bishop W L Williams writes: "The stone house at Paihia, the ruins of which are shown in the photograph, was built by the Rev W Williams as early as 1832, and was the first stone house built in N Zealand".; Mount verso - bottom right - Taken by Russell Duncan, 11 May 1903 Relationship complexity - Other later images of the ruins are at PA5-0021 and PAColl-7081-80. This was a stone and plaster house and, after Williams left to go to Te Waimate, was occupied by Charles Baker, before being used to accommodate the Church Mission printing press. William Colenso occupied it with the press 1839-1842 then John Telford 1843-1845. It is a registered historic site (Register 403).
