Outhwaite, Isa, 1842-1925

New Zealand artist. Daughter of Thomas Outhwaite, Registrar of the Auckland Supreme Court and his French wife Louisa. Outhwaite Park in Auckland is the site of the family home. A friend of Suzanne Aubert's and wrote many letters to her. Exhibited in Auckland. (Some of this information from Una Platts' 'Nineteenth century New Zealand artists', although some details are incorrect in Platts; some as a personal communication from a possible biographer of the Outhwaite family, Mrs Jill Williamson, Auckland, 10 Sep 1998).

Mentions sending him 20 pairs of socks at the Featherston Military camp, also that Missy Mowbray had a cake to send him. Letter from Isa Outhwaite of Auckland on 22 Sep 1916. Asks him to place the "sacre coeur" medal [she sent him] inside his tunic, and says that it was blessed for him. Letter from R W Cumming [?] of 16th Waikato Regiment, Sling, on 19 Jan 1917. Letter from Michael Joseph, 5 May 1917, from "Somewhere Out West". Brings news of their mutual acquaintances and comments on the weather: "The weather is really splendid here now. Description: Scrapbook thought to have been compiled by Miss Gertrude Flora Cooke Yarborough to record her travels, including a trip made in New Zealand in the company of artist Isa Outhwaite. The artworks are possibly by both women but are not signed. The scrapbook includes photographs of Miss Outhwaite, members of the Yarborough family including Alfred Cooke Yarborough of Hokianga (Gertrude's brother). Includes watercolours and photographs in the Channel Islands, Florence, the Hokianga harbour; Mr von Sturmer, Miss Marriner, Mr & Mrs Andrewes, Miss Webster, Sydney Weetman; Mangamuka, Opara, Mokoia Island, Ohinemutu, Blue Lake, Pink & White Terraces, Lake Tarawera; Egypt, County Wicklow, Glendalough, Aden, Europe. The inside back page includes a page from Debrett's Peerage 1925, showing the extended family of Sir William Henry Charles Wemyss Cooke; this includes Gertrude Flora Cooke Yarborough, and her brother Alfred Cooke Yarborough (born 1847). Also includes a 1933 invoice to Miss S L Nolan of Caulfield, Melbourne (a daughter or descendant of Gertrude F C Yarborough who married Lyster Andrew Nolan in 1884); 15 loose prints of Shakespearean poems and plays, published by Virtue and Company Ltd London. The Graphic (London), 29 March 1879, pages 316-317 shows nine sketches illustrative of "A New Zealand Excursion by Two Ladies".
