Description: Corliss has not kept a daily diary but rather an occasional journal describing special occasions such as a family holiday to Picton, a train trip from Petone to Wellington, aspects of her teaching career, lists of stories she had written, her musical interests, and a voyage to England on the `Ayrshire' in 1914, where she studied music. Included with the volume is a copy of a letter from George H Valentine to his brother (from Lefevers Peninsula, Port Adelaide, 7 Sep 1859), and notes re the `Annie Wilson' which arrived at Wellington 22 March 1854. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music Source of title - Supplied by diarist Accompanying material - As well as the letter from Valentine to his brother (1859) there are items (photocopied) regarding the voyage of the `Annie Wilson' (1854) which appear to have been kept with the journal; accompanying the journal is a letter from the donor giving additional information about the Corliss family and himself, a direct descendant of Amos Burr of the `Tory'. Description: Interview with Sir Peter Platt, born in Sheffield, England, in 1924. Talks about his family background, and his parents meeting when they were medical students. Refers to his father being awarded a Baronetcy for services as president of the Royal College of Physicians, and his reasons for not using the title in academic life. Discusses his father's political views, and his own view of the importance of research. Describes his musical awakening at the age of 13. Mentions studying at the Royal College of Music, London, and his service on torpedo boats in the English Channel during World War II that interrupted his studies. Talks about deciding to become an academic, studying at Magdalen College, Oxford, and the character of his Oxford education. Refers to teaching at Sydney University before his appointment as Professor of Music at the University of Otago. Comments on the impact his predecessor Victor Galway had in establishing music as an intellectual and rigorous discipline within the university. Explains how he came to teach medieval music, its strength and its role in the origins of Western music. Refers to his first sabbatical leave from Otago, performances attended in Germany and England, and musicology visits in the United States. Comments on how his interest in musical exploration had developed at the University of Sydney, and discusses the interdependence of musical disciplines and the arts in general. Outline how his teaching of harmony and counterpoint was modeled on the 16th century practice of counterpoint. Discusses restructuring the harmony course at Otago in 1970 in conjunction with Jack Spiers, opening the way to ethnomusicology as well as pop music and composition. Description: Interview with Margaret Nielsen, born in Hāwera in 1933. Talks about her family's musical background and learning the piano from age five. Comments on being taught by Irish Catholic nuns at the Hāwera Convent School, then attending the Hāwera Technical High School where she was school pianist. Refers to learning the violin at high school and names her music teachers. Mentions attending a school holiday music school at Whanganui. Talks about training as a teacher at Christchurch Teachers College, studying piano with Ernest Empson, and returning to Canterbury University College to study music fulltime after an aunt left her some money. Discusses her musical activities in Christchurch, including with the Harmonic Society and the Union of Graduates of Music, tutoring, and teaching music at Christ's College. Describes going to Mills College, Oakland, California on a government bursary to do a masters degree in composition. Mentions teachers, friends made, becoming interested in food and in jazz, and performing New Zealand music there. Talks about returning to New Zealand in 1959, touring with the New Zealand Opera Company, meeting Frederick Page, and being appointed a junior lecturer at Victoria University College in 1960. Talks about courses she taught, Jenny McLeod and Robin Maconie arriving as students, and difficulties between Douglas Lilburn and Fred Page. Explains how the performance course was introduced in the Music Department. Recalls the appointment of Jenny McLeod as Chair of the Music Department in 1970 causing tension in the department, and refers to subsequent restructuring of courses, teaching programmes, and management of the department. Recounts accommodation problems for the department when the Hunter Building was declared an earthquake risk. Comments on being elected to the University Council as a staff representative and support from some councillors for a purpose-built building for the department. Reflects on her retirement from the School of Music [1993] and continuing to perform for a number of years. Recalls being music advisor to Chamber Music New Zealand (CMNZ) for several years, and being on the Board of SOUNZ (the Centre for New Zealand Music). Describes the establishment of the Douglas Lilburn Trust in the Alexander Turnbull Library. Recalls her reaction to the Hagley Park murder [of a gay man, 1964] and writing a letter to the New Zealand Listener about it. Recalls her association with Roy Jack and through this becoming involved with the campaign [by Venn Young] to decriminalise homosexuality, working with Tony Taylor and John Hardwick-Smith to try to get support from National Party MPs. Mentions becoming friends with Mario and Hilda Fleischl soon after she arrived in Wellington, and Hilda dying when Igor Stravinsky was visiting [1961].
