New Zealand writer. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland. Came to New Zealand as a youth to work on sheep farms. Originally working on farm at Ruawai. After working on back country farms turned to transport, until this business failed in the 1930s depression. Survived for two years in a bush clearing on a tributary of the Howard River panning gold. With the RNZAF World War II. Settled in Nelson City, and in 1953 turned to writing. (See "Who's Who").
