Founded in 1885. On of the nine representative rowing clubs to help establish the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association (NZARA) which was formed in 16 March 1887.

The building is 2-storied, has a turret and timbering on its exterior. The building was originally located on Jervois Quay. In the 1960s, it was used by Downstage Theatre Company before the construction of the Hannah Playhouse, corner Cambridge Terrace and Courtenay Place.
