Description: Murdoch McLean discusses his father's work on the railway tunnel at Kanohi. Recalls floods in 1926 when the railway line was closed for a number of days and passengers were trapped on the train. Discusses his grandfather's work sending off kauri logs. Mentions loading logs on trucks, shifting logs by rail and rafting them down the river. Rita Sanson talks about Taranaki boats and the `Gerlock' which travelled to Kaipara. Phyllis Hooper discusses music in the area. Mentions Bel (Belle) Wilson, Bella Russell, Millie Nicholls, Dick Aitkenhead, Reverend Noel white, Dora Eddelston, Jasper Calder, Alice Rimmer and Doug Lilly. Recalls local musical productions, playing music at the church and Sunday School and playing for fundraising concerts such as the Queen Carnival. Comments on music teachers Dennis Coles and Graham Nobbs at the College in the 1960s and 1970s. Doug Honore talks about his great grandfather (Abel) Abraham Honore who was attached to a German Mission from 1820 to 1848 and sent to the German settlement at Upper Moutere before going to Ruapuke Island near Stewart Island. Describes how Maori there were in poor health as a result of contact with the whalers and sealers and Honore helped with crop growth and the improvement of whares. Talks about how he asked for a wife after eight years, the birth of five children, their move to near Ranfurly and then Wellington and the death of his first wife. Mentions that Honore spoke English, Maori, Danish and Swedish and also served as a minister in the Scandanavian settlement of Forty Mile Bush near Dannevirke and amongst the Maori in the Manawatu. Gives reasons for changing churches from Brethren to the Upper Hutt Uniting Parish, St. David's, St. Andrew's, the Baptist Church, Church of Christ and subsequently Iona. Relates that she sang in the St. David's choir, travelling there by bicycle or bus. Talks of St. Andrew's becoming part of the uniting parish and mentions the loss of the church building. Relates her enjoyment of services at the Wallaceville Church. Explains her faith and prayer mentioning Rev. Archie Kirkwood. Mentions that her family have moved away from Upper Hutt. Describes the Hawke's Bay earthquake, her father's injury, being evacuated to Palmerston North. Describes the church she attended in Ahuriri. Talks of attitudes by various denominations to each other, mentions a variety of buildings used for worship. Recalls Mr. Purvis building a Sunday School in Trentham, later used for church services. Description: Arthur Kay Ibbotson was born in North East Valley, Dunedin and, apart from two years during World War II has lived in Dunedin all his life. Outlines family background - mother died when self aged two, father re-married. Recalls going to kindergarten at All Saints Anglican Church, North Dunedin with friend Martin Findlay, later Attorney General; Daily Assembly at Otago Boys High School; Sunday School and later bible class; activities at socials; rugby football team, with reference to inter-bible class tournaments and athletic meetings. Mentions William James Morrell a Latin scholar at Otago Boys High who later became chancellor of the University of Otago and Jimmy Duncan, an All Black also a student at Otago Boys High. Describes student days at Otago University - was on the Executive of the Students Association and enrolled as a Special Constable at the police station when the riots took place outside Wardell's in George Street, Dunedin. Describes W E C Reid & Co. offices, commencing as an accountant, becoming a partner in 1940. Refers to the Depression (1930s). Recalls studying Company Law with reference to the new Company Act and its effect on overseas firms. Recalls W E C Reid becoming W E C Reid McInnes & Co, then Haskins & Sells, later Deloitte Haskins & Sells and now Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. Outlines involvement with cricket, being appointed Otago's representative on Cricket Council 1958 / 1959, retiring from that position in 1964 and twelve years later was invited to be President of New Zealand Cricket Council. Compares standard of New Zealand cricket then and now. Discusses involvement with Cancer Society from 1965, being on the National Council for 12 years. Relates he became an organist and Sunday school teacher, mentioning the roll, staffing and the arrangement of classes. Talks of members of old folks' homes attending plays and concerts and recalls their transportation by car. Mentions his interest in theatre. Recalls carol singing. Explains about the union of the parishes and the ministers involved, why he chose to worship at St. Andrew's and talks of the age of the congregation. Mentions church music and the the use of drums and piano. Talks of friends outside of church and his family's church attendance, the Anzac Day Service and taking communion.
