Description: Nancy Taylor was born on 13 March 1919 near Taihape. Gives details of her parent's backgrounds. Recalls a number of shifts as a young child as a result of her father's work as a farm worker. Describes her parent's separation while she was still young. Talks about her mother's hard work and commitment to education. Describes being educated by the Aided (Correspondence ) School and later attending Levin Primary School when her mother moved to Levin. Recalls the circumstances which meant that she attended Nga Tawa School. Describes attending Wellington Teachers Training College and Victoria University of Wellington before becoming a teacher. Recalls the outbreak of World War II and working in the public service as part of essential work. Describes meeting future husband Nigel Taylor, marrying him in 1941 and his being called up and sent to New Caledonia to fight. Talks about her secondment to the Historical Branch of Internal Affairs. Comments that the war gave some women opportunites to do work that would normally be done by men. Talks about Historical Branch publications including the Historical Atlas. Recalls contemporaries at work including Janet Paul, Mary Boyd and Ian Wards. Mentions Professor John Beaglehole. Talks about the wartime expectation of women and sexuality. Comments on rationing, manpowering and the Japanese threat. Describes the relief at the end of the war, return of Nigel Taylor and essential industry he worked on before returning to law. Talks about some women losing their wartime jobs when men returned from the war. Describes having children and working part-time and editing for the Alexander Turnbull Library. Describes beginning writing Volumes 1 and 2 of the Official War Histories (The New Zealand people at war : the Home Front) in 1962. Notes that this became a twenty year project.
