Worked in the timber industry in Westport before moving to Burnham Military Camp in 1939. Was in charge of the NZ 26th Battalion, rising to the rank of full Colonel in 1945. Wounded in Egypt, he was evacuated to a British hospital, rejoining the 20th Battalion in June 1942. Awarded Military Cross and DSO. After the war he went on to a Government Rehabilitation Scheme in Westport to learn a new trade before joining his uncle Ces Walker in business. Son of John Charles Fountaine (1878-1955). Also known as "Spout"

Description: Denver Fountaine outlines his life in Westport where he was born and the timber industry pre World War II. Recalls going to Burnham Military Camp Sept. 1939; being in charge of the New Zealand 26th Battalion for the Battle of El Alamein, rising to the rank of Colonel in 1945.
