Quinn, Arthur Philip, 1920-2009

Arthur Quinn was born in the Waimata Valley, attended the Waimata Primary School, and high school in Gisborne. He worked in various jobs in Gisborne before joining the Railways Workshops at Woburn in 1937 as a Casual Emergency Junior Iron Machinist. Became involved with the trade union movement and joined the Communist Party in 1937. Also involved with the peace movement, and the Federation of Home and School Association. Appointed Justice of the Peace.

Description: Letters mainly addressed to Susan Skudder at Waikato University, written in response to letters from her or advertisements in journals regarding the experience of New Zealanders in response to the Spanish Civil War. Some letters are from people who were involved in the response, or who were active at the time; others are from librarians and historians responding to her requests for guidance and assistance. Some letters include arrangements for interviews or visits to repositories. Letters from Bert Roth include photocopies of items he thought of interest to her research. Two letters are addressed to her father, Lewis Arthur Skudder, from his colleague Bill Girling-Butcher; another is addressed to her thesis supervisor, Dr. Laurence Barber. One letter dated August 1970 is from Renee Shadbolt to John Shennan, an earlier researcher into New Zealand and the Spanish Civil War.
