Fox, Charles Elliott, 1878-1977

Former Canon for Melanesia. Came to New Zealand in 1884, his father serving as Anglican minister in Gisborne. Educated in Napier, and then at Auckland University. Trained for the ministry at St John's College, Auckland, and worked as a missionary on Norfolk Island, and then on the Solomon Islands for the Melanesian Mission. Lived at San Cristoval (Cristobal) in the Solomon Islands. Interviewed in 1975

Description: Charles Elliot Fox came to New Zealand in 1884, where his father served as an Anglican minister in Gisborne. Recalls his childhood in Gisborne; the Tarawera eruption and his mother's death from tuberculosis on the night of the eruption, the possibility of a visit of Te Kooti to Gisborne; attending Napier High School and memories of Te Aute; his study of Greek and Latin and playing cricket and rugby. Discusses attending St John's College, Auckland and pranks played. Describes walking from Napier to Wellington. Comments on the bush around Norsewood and Woodville and Napier before the earthquake. Recalls listening to William Colenso's sermons, and boyhood friendship with Percy Spiller. Describes Samuel and Leonard Williams. Recalls his early interest in Melanesia. Describes time as a headmaster on San Cristobal and experiences with local headhunters. Comments on this practice in relation to weapons supplied by the British. Describes dressing as a Melanesian while living in the islands and preaching sermons in eight languages. Talks about his compilation of a language dictionary and publication of a book on the area. Mentions Bishop Patteson. Comments on colonial government, the Christian mission in the islands and the future of the Solomon Islands. Description: Watercolour sketch shows a chalet in the Swiss Alps, with fir trees near it and steep pointed mountains in the distance. The lower part of the page quotes a poem by Rev Chas Fox, M.A. "God's spirit comes and meets me on the mountains / And tells me all His secret thoughts aloud / His voice like music of the living fountains / His tabernacle the descending cloud". This is possibly by the Reverend Charles Fox who was in Auckland and worked for the Melanesian Mission for some years. The Mission's activities extended over the islands west of Fiji, including the Solomon Islands and the New Hebrides. The headquarters and training school were at Auckland 1849-1867, then at Norfolk Island until 1920, when the training school moved to the Solomon Islands, with the diocesan office being opened in Auckland. In 1975 the Mission became the Church of Melanesia, with its headquarters at Honiara. The London office was mainly concerned with forwarding supplies and raising finance.
