Grey, Lex, 1919-2007

Attended Wellington Teachers' College and taught at various schools before becoming Adult Education tutor at Victoria University of Wellington. Later Lecturer at Auckland Teachers' College, and involved with the Māori Education Foundation. Through the Foundation, Mr Grey became involved with the Van Leer Project in Aboriginal Education in Australia. Member of Ex Libris Society in 1950s. Son of Alexander Grey and Catherine Mills (née Ferguson). Married 1) Doris Georgina (née Nauss; b 1927); 2) Betty Patricia (formerly Brown; née Pearse; b 1927)

Description: Lex Grey was born in Wellington on 28 May 1919. Describes his background as a teacher, lecturer and researcher. Talks about his involvement with Playcentre and development of the concept of parents training to be supervisors. Describes working with the Maori Education Foundation, going to Sydney, being upset by the status of aborigines and speaking to the Parliamentary Select Committee. Talks about the establishment of the van Leer project and returning to New Zealand to select Maori to be involved. Comments on some opposition from Aboriginal leaders, the growth of the project, difficulties in getting land and buildings and getting social welfare books back. Talks about the Aborigines being trained by Maori. Describes finishing the project six months after the due date to train Aborigines in administration so they could form their own federation. Describes his understanding of Aboriginal qualities and values.
