Description: Norman Goffin describes arrival of parents, both strong Salvationists, in New Zealand in 1913. Recalls their early experiences working with the Salvation Army in Britain and Ireland, and their full time work for the Army in New Zealand, which entailed many shifts of residence. Describes involvement of self and brothers in the Salvation Army bands in Foxton, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. Describes the career of brother, Dean Goffin, a noted composer and band conductor. Recalls service in World War II with the New Zealand Army in military bands in the Middle East, and career as a band player, composer and conductor after the war with various bands, including the Onslow Brass Band. Discusses band music and composition.
