Description: Lisa Rickard was born in India in 1912 to missionary parents. Relates that she and her family arrived in New Zealand in 1947 from England, and describes the NZ Army huts at Mangaroa in which they lived. Relates that her father joined them from Sweden and gives advice for living with elderly parents. Talks of their pet magpie and possum. Recalls Mr Benton, a teacher at Mangaroa School, travelling by railcar. Describes taking her class to swim in the Hutt River, pets' day, being threatened by a mother of one of her pupils, understanding accents. Talks of children of various backgrounds whom she taught at Woodstock School, India. Recalls work for the local people organised by her father at the Mission, especially gardening and explains the watering system, mentions the quality of the drinking water and the wells.
