Description: Gives details of family background in England, emigration to New Zealand in 1911. Describes voyage out, recollections of Wellington, positions with the New Zealand Times. Recalls enlistment in 1915 with New Zealand Rifle Brigade, medical examination for enlistment, parents' attitute to war, German boarder and his treatment in New Zealand during the war. Describes training at Trentham, voyage and ports of call on way to England with 14th Reinforcements, training at Sling Camp and Etaples, action at Fleurbaix, Ploegsteert Wood, Battle of Messines. Describes his job as a runner, the trenches. Refers to Pat Lawlor. Gives details of his injury - shell concussion (shell shock), the symptoms, hospitalised at Arques and then sent to Walton-on-Thames - Oakland Park Hotel (converted into hospital). Recalls conditions in France, lice, divisional baths, drinking, the estaminets. On return to New Zealand went to inspect rehabilitation land at Whangamomona in Taranaki. Recalls visit to America in 1920s, working as copywriter for Ilott Advertising, and his involvement with Esperanto. Gives his views on the RSA.
