Tramping in the Rimutaka and Tararua ranges and a trip to the West Coast

Description: Opens with a group of men on a tramp into the valley of the Orongorongo River in the southern Rimutaka Ranges. Included are views of the river and surrounding mountains, in particular Mount Matthews which they climbed posing for a photograph at the Mt Matthews trig station. There are views in the native forest and one looking over the Wainuiomata Valley. One image shows a group of men standing on the Fernside Railway Station labled as the "Mt Hector Party". This probably relates to a group of photographs later in the album recording a tramp in the Taraua Ranges. A group of five photographs records a trip to the Dawson Falls on Mount Egmont. There are views of the road leading to the falls through native forest, the group sitting on a huge rock below the falls, and the falls themselves. The other images in this group show the party on the Mountain, and loaded onto a cart at Eltham. Two pages of views of Days Bay, Lower Hutt, showing individual houses, Croyden School, and coastal scenes. A surveying trip to Kapiti Island. Views of the western cliff face of the island, the caretaker's house and surroundings, a tame deer, nautilus shells, and H E Girdlestone standing beside an 8 inch micrometer on a tripod. Views of the Volcanic Plateau showing Mounts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro and the surrounding plains. The departure of the Main Expeditionary Force from Wellington during the First World War. The focus of these images is on the transports moored at the wharves, and the two escorting warships, the Japanese "Ibuki" and the British H M S "Minotaur", in the harbour. A group of women playing golf on the Waiwhetu golf links Family and friends at Eastbourne. Trip to the West Coast and the glaciers. Views of the main road south of Ross passing through heavy native forest, the Franz Josef Glacier and people climbing its ice fields, Mount Tasman, the Toaroha Rapids, and the Fox Glacier. There are also views of the Pelorus River and Bridge, the Buller Gorge, the Buller River, and the bridge on the road between Lyell and Inangahua. A general view of Greymouth where the party stayed with friends whoes two children were photographed driving peddle cars. A southern crossing of the Tararua Ranges. The route was by way of Mount Reeves, then down into the Tauherenikau River valley, along the river, then up to Mount Alpha and along the ridges to Hector and out again along the Waiotauru River to Otaki Forks. There are two photographs of members of the tramping party, as well as general views of the ranges, the rivers, a mountain tarn, and the Waihoanga Bridge. A visit to the Army training camp at Trentham. Photographs of individual soldiers and groups of soldiers and visitors. Three views of a man on horseback and a dog in the Manganuiateo River. Description: Map of the town of Waimeha, now part of Waikanae Beach, is bordered by the sea, Waimeha Road and Rauparaha Street. Sections are numbered. Includes Te Moana Road and Tutere, Ngapaki and Huiawa Streets, the latter being adjacent to the Waimeha Stream. Recreational reserves, raupo and flax swamps are marked. A note states that one section has been purchased by the local body for a future road. Handwritten notes adjacent to the map describe the terrrian and vegetation, a total of acreages of recreation, esplanade and road reserves, roads and allotments, also details of building line restrictions A stamp on bottom left is a receipt of when the plan was submitted to the Local Authority A pencilled note on the numbered recreational reserve includes the acreage Quantity: 1 map(s). Description: Comprises papers relating to Buck's career as a surveyor mostly based in Lower Hutt and Wellington and including correspondence, surveying notes, many traverses sheets and related papers. Also includes some letters in Maori, from Moeraki and Otaki, from persons concerned about wrongly sent and received accounts. Also includes five letters in Maori (Kai Tahu dialect) (1) informing the receiver of the arrival of a carpenter's bill, and the writer's intent to pursue the matter with a lawyer; (2) expressing concern about the management and use of land at Otaki; (3) details a court case involving stolen money. Description: Photographs of surveyors on the job in the eastern Wairarapa, the Rangatikei District, and the Wanganui River. Most of these photographs date from 1905 to 1907 and include Hugh Bogle and Hubert Girdlestone. There are three photographs relating to sports. One is an unidentified rugby team with Hubert Girdlestone in the front row. Another is of a women's hockey match in Auckland in 1907, and the third shows hurdlers in action during the Basin Reserve sports of March 1909. Survey trips and holidays to the South Wairarapa and Tokaanu area

Description: There are six general groups of photographs making up this album. The first relates to a surveying tramp through part of the the south eastern Rimutaka Ranges. It begins at Wharepapa outstation west of Lake Onoke (Lake Ferry). There are views of Palliser Bay, Lake Ferry, Wharepapa outstation, the surrounding farmland, and people attached to the station. The survey team's tramp into the mountains followed the Wharepapa River north west of the station and then up the Papatahi stream to the Papatahi trig. Here they set up camp which is depicted under snow. They then moved south to the trig on Mount Matthews where they again set up camp. There are images of tents, men, native forest, Mt Matthews, the trig, dogs, the surrounding ranges, and views of Palliser Bay. The party descended with their equipment via Matthews Stream to Eglington's Whare at Mukamuka. The second group is a record of a family holiday at Tokaanu and Lake Taupo. Again there are views of the tents, and the party consisted of women as well as men, including Girdlestone's mother. There are images of the Tokannu River, the Tokaanu Stream, the Tongariro River, views of Tokaanu township, the Tokaanu wharf on Lake Taupo, boats, the Waimarino track, hot springs, rod fishers on Lake Taupo and the rivers, and the Tongariro Bridge. There are a group of images taken during a fishing trip and picnic at Waihaha, Western Bay, Lake Taupo, and a view of Waihi Village and the Waihi Falls. Another group of images of Maori were taken at Otukou west of Lake Rotaira, and include views of the meeting house "Okahukura". The third group of images relate to a survey camp in the Tokaanu/Waimarino area, though there may be camps in more than one location. The main camp was located at Tokaanu, but another is described as being on the Waimarino plains, and another is located on the Pihanga Saddle. There are views of the camp, tents, men, and of life in the camp such as hair cutting, and Maori visiting on Sunday (one of the team's members was Maori). Images of bush and distant views were taken along the horse track from Otukou to Tokaanu, and there are views of the Volcanic Plateau and Mount Ngauruhoe, Otukou Village, hot springs, Ketetahi hut cookhouse and springs on Mount Tongariro, Pihanga hill south of Tokaanu, the countryside and a climbing party on Ngauruhoe. The fourth group consist of twelve photographs taken in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. The fifth group of 46 images record a climb up Mount Egmont. There are views of the mountain, native forest, climbers in the snow, and the accomodation house. One group of images consists of close ups of native alpine plants in flower. The sixth group relate to a walking trip on the Volcanic Plateau through forest and open country. There are views of the mountains, cliffs, a stream and celmisias in flower. Description: Two European explorers walking up a hill in the foreground towards three other men who are gazing at the lake beyond them and the distant hills in the background. Fox explored the Wairarapa in May 1843 with Clifford, Vavasour and Whitehead with a view to initial surveying and establishing farming in the area. Exhibited in 'Picturing Paradise; the colonial watercolours of William Fox', Exhibition at National Library Gallery 25 February - 18 June 2000; Hocken Library, Dunedin, 11 September - 15 October 2000.
