Major clothing retail chain founded by German Jewish family in 1863, the period of the Otago goldrushes. The family came from the Australian goldfields and initially set up in Queenstown before moving to Dunedin. Main members were Bendix Hallenstein (1835-1905) and his son-in-law, William Fels. See article on Bendix Hallenstein in DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p187-188). The Wellington branch was opened in 1920 and remained on its site on the corner of Cuba and Ghuznee streets until 1973.
