Description: Shows the dead chief wrapped in a blanket and with feathers in his hair, in a sitting position resting against a carved post. In the left foreground, a woman in a loose robe holds her head in a grieving gesture in front of a row of three heads on the ground. Three other bare-breasted women kneel in a semi-circle at the right, one cutting herself on the chest. An elaborately tattooed man in cape and tunic and holding a taiaha, stands at the right pointing to the right out of the picture. A crowd of other mourners stands in the right background. This French print is derived and imaginatively adapted from Louis de Sainson's 1834 engraving "Scene of mourning in New Zealand" ("Scene de deuil a la Nouvelle Zelande"). There are also similarities to Sainson's 1834 engraving "Funerailles d'un ariki". See Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde ..." (Paris, 1834) at qR 910.8 DUM Voya.
