He describes conversion and education of Maori, inter-tribal war while at Matamata and his journey on HMS `Rattlesnake' with James Busby and Samuel Marsden from the Bay of Islands to Queen Charlotte Sound (1837). Description: Comprises collection of material relating to Alfred Fairbrother's time as a Baptist Māori Missionary in the Rotorua region from 1883 to 1886. Collection includes a handwritten journal by Alfred Fairbrother containing Māori hymns, clippings, and diary entries relating to his life in Te Wairoa and Ōhinemutu, particularly his interactions with local Māori. Also includes a folder comprising handwritten notes, a transcript of Bible passage Job 22.21, a greeting postcard, and two booklets relating to Egypt. Also includes four photographs, comprising one glass lantern slide portrait of Fairbrother, taken by Josiah Martin between 1883 and 1886, a digital print of the same image (likely made by Ron Keam), one albumen print of the Pink and White Terraces, annotated verso, and one albumen print of a man, possibly Fairbrother, with an annotation verso that reads "Road to Hot Lake New Zealand North". Description: Mr and Mrs Elisha Loomis were among the first missionaries sent by the American Board Commissioners of Foreign Missions to begin missionary work in the Sandwich, or as they were later known, Hawaiian Islands. Coats Family : Papers relating to Robert George Coats

Description: Diary with a partial transcript recording the travels of Canon Coats as an Anglican missionary with the Bishop in the Pacific Islands, Sep-Nov 1907. The diary commences on Friday 13 September 1907 as Coats' vessel leaves Norfolk Island heading to Vila, New Herbrides. The diary recounts his missionary activities including meeting parishioners, conducting religious services, attending funerals and baptisms. Coats often details the lives of the local people he meets, their rites, customs and social arrangements. Church matters are also discussed including some of the duties of the Bishop. From the diary it is unclear which vessel Coats is travelling on, but it would appear to be a steamer, and is skippered by Captain Hawkins. The partial transcript of the diary covers the period 13 September to 15 October 1907. This material is accompanied by biographical information detailing Canon Coats' life. Source of title - Supplied by Library From 1902-1908 Robert Coats was a lay missionary for the diocese of Melanesia and organising secretary for the Melanesia Mission in the South Island of New Zealand. Description: The journal of Tatai, in Kiribati, records an account of Tatai's visit to Samoa, his training there as a missionary and his return to Nui; a genealogy of Nui; and lastly an account of the visit to Nui by the canoe Toantebuke, including a list of those on board. Entries 1 May 1840-24 May 1844 concern the mission at Waikouaiti, established at the behest of J Jones, difficulties of mission work compounded by the proximity of a whaling and trading settlement. Entries 28 May 1844-1 Nov 1847 cover his years in Wellington, pastoral work with Maori and Europeans. Mar 1850 concerns Watkin's work as a Methodist minister in Sydney.
