Description: Interview with Brett Billingsley, born in Blenheim in 1952. Explains his father was a builder and then a farm manager at Ethelton Valley, Cheviot. Talks about working as a shepherd at Mt Hutt, than as a farm worker at Spurtelton Downs, Omihi, followed by Gower Terraces, Spotswood. Describes being employed at the age of 19 by the Department of Agriculture as an assistant livestock officer. Mentions a brief course at Flock House and then working in a team collecting blood samples from cattle for brucellosis testing, and vaccinating calves against the disease. Comments that the disease was eradicated by the end of the 1970s and they then concentrated on tuberculosis testing. Refers to the lack of personal protection when working with diseased cattle and live vaccines. Mentions the role of feral animals in the spread of TB in Marlborough and talks about controlling feral animals on Molesworth including rabbits, ferrets, possums and pigs to prevent TB. Refers to shooting wild pigs from helicopters and carrying out post mortems on the spot. Talks about his first trip to Molesworth Station in 1972, Bill Chisholm the manager and his wife Ann, and later managers Don Reid and Jim Ward. Mentions their different approaches to staff management. Talks about staff at Molesworth station - stockmen, cooks and others. Recalls that staff were able to repair vehicles and other machinery and the station had a blacksmith's shop. Refers to photographs from the early 1900s of wool cartage by Albert Satherly with horses. Mentions other Marlborough stations including Tarndale, Clarence and Awatere. Refers to memorable floods in the area and a severe snowfall in 1992. Describes fencing in the Marlborough area including rabbit fences in the 1880s and scab fences. Refers to the spread of Hieracium, briar rose and Pinus contorta in Marlborough and efforts to control them. Talks about being able to spend family holidays at Molesworth. Reflects on the future of Molesworth, his hope it will not be commercialised and the need to maintain pest control.
