Description: In `The cruel sea' Norman Leary describes the excitement on the farm when he learned that he and his brothers were to spend 'a whole two weeks' at the seashore. Recalls getting the pony and trap ready - the two horses were put on hard feed and the trap had to be checked, wheels removed and axle greased etc. A little hut of kerosene tins on the edge of a river in 10 acres of broom, quite a good hideout, is the setting for Gravel pit warriors. Recalls the pastimes and fun during week-ends and holidays as children, and the gang known as `the bottomenders' and the hockey team known as `Gravel pit warriors'.
