Bevan, Thomas, 1836-1913

Born in Whitchurch, Shropshire, the son of Thomas Bevan (1801-1881), a rope maker who came to NZ. Arrived in New Zealand with his father and siblings on the ship 'Lady Nugent' in 1841. Followed his father's trade, and farmed in Otaki and Manawatu Districts. He wrote "Reminiscences of an old colonist" (572.9931 Maori Pamphlet Vol. 4). Married Haana Ransfield. Birth date taken from photograph, and from Death notice which said he died in 1913, aged 77. (Date given in Cyclopedia of New Zealand, Vol 1, p. 1105, is 1840-1913)

Description: Bevan describes incidents in his life in the Otaki and Manawatu districts from 1840 to the 1860s. He was the son of a rope maker and followed his father's trade and farmed. He refers in particular to relationships between Maori and settlers and includes descriptions of Maori pa, legends, customs and the scenery, and a walk he made as a child in 1845 from Wellington to Waikawa, Otaki.
