Grand Lodge of New Zealand - Certificate of membership and drawing

Date: 1952-1959

From: Fowler, Leo, 1902-1976: Papers and photographs

Reference: MSI-Papers-11554

Description: Leo Fowler's Free Masons certificate of membership for the Lodge Calliope in Apia, Western Samoa. Also a pencil drawing, which is probably a draft design for the book cover for Fowler's 1959 novel 'Brown Conflict'. The drawing includes the book title and author's name and drawing of a soldier on the right hand side [possibly the design for the book's spine], a larger title at the top of the main part of the drawing, with various people, Maori and Pakeha and a Maori carving drawn in the middle, with an inset at the bottom of a young couple looking at each other, and the author's name at the bottom of the drawing. This drawing was previously housed in 77-014-6/05. Processing information: The Freemasons certificate was originally housed in 77-014-3/03 but was flattened by conservation in 2013 and rehoused in this larger folder. The drawing was previously held in 77-014-6/05 but was removed when the collection's records were being enhanced in 2014, so the item could be stored flat.
