Description: A fenced grave enclosure, with a painted canoe, upright in the ground, marking one corner of the fence, and a carved wooden tapu figure at another corner. Shows the grave of John (Jacky) Love, the husband of a Maori woman and an early whaler in Queen Charlotte Sound. A drawing prepared by Messenger as a book illustration copied from a pencil drawing by J. W. Barnicoat, with title 'Monument erected by the Maories to a white man [over the grave of a white man] Tawaite, March 22 1843'. The original of this drawing remained in the Barnicoat family until being given to the Hocken Library, Dunedin, ca 1996. A copy of the Barnicoat drawing is in the Drawings and Prints files (neg. 8711 1/4 & 47060 1/2).
