Member of Wellington Repertory Society in the 1960s; he designed some of the company's posters and programmes. Twin brother of John Smythe. Fisher and Paykel's first full-time, graduate industrial designer, after graduating from the Wellington Polytechnic School of Design. Self-employed with Marks and Smythe Designers and then the Designforces partnership. He stood as a Labour Party candidate for East Coast Bays in the 1984 general election. In 1998 he became the inaugural Executive Director of the Designers Secretariat until establishing CREATIONZ Consultants in 1991 with Helen Schamroth.
