Toms, Tametame, 1835-1910

Second son of Joseph Toms (1798-1849) and his wife Te Ua Torikiriki. Thomas Toms was born 20 Apr 1835 and baptised in 1842 at Cloudy Bay. Thomas Toms had Ngati Toa - Ngati Haumia whakapapa through his mother who was the daughter of Nohorua Te Whatarauihi and Miriama Te Wainokenoke. He married Rawinia Tamati Ho (1839-1911). They had three children: Kere (b 1881), Miriama Te Wainokenoke (1884-1953) and Tamati Tame (1899-1964). Another marriage was to Amelia Guard (1840-1893), daughter of John Guard. They had the following children: Charles (b 1861), Ellen Helen (b 1865), John (1866-1944), Maria (b 1873), Cecelia and Stephen Parker.

It notes that George was often known as Joseph "and so signed Treaty of Waitangi", and that he was the son-in-law of Nohorua. Also includes a covering letter, 8 Feb 1954, from the firm of Maginnity, Samuel and Hunter to the Library, offering the Bible of Te Ua Hera Kotua, that had belonged to her grandfather, Joseph Toms.
