Description: 'History of Samoa' by Robert Mackenzie Watson, published by Whitcombe & Tombs, 1918. Also loose papers that were laid in to the volume, including clippings, correspondence, drafts, research notes, and a colour postcard. These include a nine page account written on 'Hotel Windsor' stationery by an unknown writer, about the history of Samoa, particularly relating to the German colonial administration of 1900-1914, and the beginning of the New Zealand administration from 1914. Includes a draft typescript of 'The man who was stolen', and an annotated published version of this story as published in January 1905 in 'Illustrated Magazine' titled 'Kidnapped: A tale of the Pacific' by 'Beachcomber'. Also includes page 3 and 4 of a letter (pages 1 and 2 were not included in these papers) by George Egerton Leigh Westbrook criticising New Zealand's political involvement with Samoa. This is written on the 'New Zealand Samoan Guardian Newspaper Ltd' letterhead. The clippings relate to Samoan history, and are dated 1902 and circa 1930-1941. The postcard is of "Samoan girls" printed by A M Brodziak and Co., Suva. It is addressed to Fred G Layton of Wellington, New Zealand from William, dated 10 August 1909. Title supplied by Library.
