Description: An imaginative reconstruction of the interior of the temple of the Vestal Virgins with its altar and eternal flame inside a rotunda with colums on the left. A semi-circular staircase rises towards the altar on the right. Description: Roman ruins with three colums beside a pool, surrounded with the remains of other buildings, probably a drawing done for tourists by an obscure Italian artist at Pozzuoli, near Naples. The artist's surname may not be as transcribed above, although the first name is clearly Ercole. Gideon Mantell was studying the ruins at Pozzuoli in March 1843 and the drawing is likely to have been executed and acquired about that date. Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
