Son of Edwin and Mercy Selby (née Gardner). Married Hilda Mary Duke in 1916. Carpenter by trade, he worked on early bridges in Wairarapa and Forty-mile Bush. In business in Masterton as a builder and contractor 1922-1937, then employed by Public Works Department as a carpenter from 1942. On Masterton Trust Lands Trust 1925-1932. Interested in all education matters. Foundation member of Masterton Beautifying Society; first president Trades and Labour Council in Masterton.
