Te Ao, Ropata, -1908

An elder chief of Ngati Raukawa and Member of Parliament for Western Maori 1894-96. Ropata was the son of Te Aotutahanga and Te Raute of the Ngati Pare of Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Te Akamapuhia hapu of Ngati Toa. Te Akamapuhia married Te Rangikaiwhiria of Ngati Raukawa, hence this Ngati Toa hapu are now primarily affiliated with the Ngati Raukawa tribe. The Te Ao family have lived in the Otaki district since the late 1820s.
