Description: Contains whakapapa and waiata from the South Wairarapa, written in a variety of hands (much of the whakapapa seems to focus on Hemi Te Miha and the Te Whaiti family); also contains land records including lists of owners of various blocks and respective shares, and records of the members of various hapu (Ngati Rakairangi, Ngati Moe, Ngati Tukaiora, Ngati Te Rangitawhanga); also contains a letter from Henare Te Whaiti to Maui Pomare about politics; also contains a letter from Paora Waitere of Papawai to Kaihau Te Whaiti enclosing some waiata There is a detailed account by Matina Ruta Tamaiwhakakiteaterangi of the Potangaroa hui, written in 1905; there is also a letter written by Matina about the succession to Paora Tihi; there is also a subscription form for the Maori Peace Memorial to be erected in Masterton Park, a copy of Te Kahiti o Niu Tireni from 1920, and some forms associated with the Rongokako Maori Council; there are some architectural plans for a house for J Te Whaiti at Pirinoa prepared in 1925 (J Te Whaiti is possibly Hohaia Te Whaiti aka Joe Te Whaiti)

Description: Photographic portraits taken between ca 1890 and ca 1930, of Iraia and Kaihau Te Whaiti and their children, grandchildren and associates. Photographs mainly by unidentified photographers, but one is by Tosca Studio of Wellington. - Includes images of Kaihau with her daughters and grand-daughters wearing korowai and other styles of cloaks. - Also includes Kaihau Te Whaiti with other family members dressed in mourning clothing including pare kawakawa (mourning wreaths). They are shown seated on the verandah of a house with items laid out in front of them on a cloak and whariki (mat). The items include men's clothing, a mere, a kotiate, a photograph and a tokotoko (walking stick). - Also includes image of unidentified man (on left, who was the Senior Warden of the Lodge), Iraia Te Whaiti (middle) and H A Parkinson (on right, who was the presiding Worshipful Master), all dressed in Freemasons Regalia, taken by unknown photographer in 1904. The occasion is likely to be on 9 Sep 1904 when Te Whaiti was accepted as a master mason in the Greytown Lodge. (He became a member of the Greytown Lodge of Freemasons in June 1904). Also includes a piece of ephemera relating to a photograph order for an opaltype of this image which is also held by the Library (see reference PA15-001). The photographic ephemera indicates the Dimond & Hart created the opaltype, and has instructions relating to colourisation of the image. - Named individuals include: Putuputu and Ruia-i-te-rangi (Ruia), and Rumiria. Photographers include Billens (of Palmerston North), Christopher Bede (of Auckland) L C Scott (of Wellington) and Shanly (of Greytown - probably the same photographer based in the Hawke's Bay). - Includes nine images of George and Meri Te Whaiti's wedding in 1912. - Also includes a series of images of George Te Whaiti dressed in Freemason's regalia (also some manuscripts material and photographic ephemera related to these images from Christopher Bede Studios Ltd dated 1959). - Also includes two images associated with a centenary celebration, which could be the Greytown Centennial Celebrations in 1940. These include an image of George Te Whaiti dressed in a piupiu, and a group portrait taken from above of a large group of people dining in a hall. This has been photographed from above. - Named people include: Kaihau, Hera, Kere, Agnes, Maikara, Ngaoko-i-te-rangi, Harry and John Te Whaiti. Also Patihona Kokiri, Sarah Poihipi, Bishop Bennett, Ben Couch, Ralph Hannan, E C (Neddy) Holmes and Mrs Holmes. These last four people are shown in an image of "Mr and Mrs Holmes passing the deeds of Te Hopai Farm to the Minister of Maori Affairs Hon Mr Hannan, for the Maori Education Foundation" which occurred in 1963.
