Description: 1874 medal is brass suspended from purple ribbon, showing dividers, star and square rule with inset stones. 1906 medal is brass suspended from pale blue ribbon; inscription at top reads Aorangi Lodge no. 2300, and below is an arrangement of set square, long-handled fans, and the motto "Ex tenebris lux". Frank Grady was probably the jeweller of the 1906 medal. Container has inscription insde lid: Frank Grady Masonic Jeweller, Wellington, N.Z. Inscriptions: Verso - (1874 medal): Presented to Bro. C. P. Powles by the Brethren of Lodge Waterloo 463, S.C., Wellington, New Zealand 6th October 1874.; Verso - (1906 medal): To Bro. C.P. Powles, P.M., 4.12.06 / as a token of esteem from the Brethren. Seated: Thomas Kennedy Macdonald, Augustus Carl Ferdinand Koch, and F Grady. Photograph taken by Herrmann in about 1897. The portrait of Charles Barraud is by James Nairn, and was painted in 1897 which was also the year of Barraud's death (Info from Rebecca Rice, 2009). Source of descriptive information - Date and photographer identified by Library client. Formerly identified as New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts first council, circa 1908. Source of descriptive information - date 1897 for the portrait of Barraud by James Nairn supplied by library client. Also suggested that this may have been a retrospective gathering of men associated with the transition of the Fine Arts Association of New Zealand to the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in 1889.
