Norman, Egerton Herbert (Dr), 1909-1957

Canadian High Commissioner to New Zealand 1953-1955. He was born in Japan to Methodist missionaries, but was educated in Canada. In 1935 he married Irene Clark and held university teaching posts. He returned to Japan in 1940 as an employee of Canadian External Affairs, in the Canadian Legation in Tokyo. It was here that he was interned from December 1941, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, until mid-1942. He died in Cairo in 1957 after a leap from a rooftop.
