Description: Contains waiata (mainly laments and love songs) relating to Whanganui, with explanatory notes, and traditions about the Aotea canoe and its migration from Hawaiki to New Zealand; also contains narratives about important Whanganui ancestors and their activities and conflicts, and anecdotes about 19th century Whanganui people; also contains general notes about patupaiarehe, the god Maru, and a whakapapa and narrative of the Ngati Tutaiaroa hapu. Volume 1 includes a letter from Hare Hongi to S P Smith, 12 Mar 1895. A note from Smith to Elsdon Best says that much of this has been printed in the Journal of the Polynesian Society.
