Consultant, writer and historian. Married Ralph Henry Tonks in 1959. Co-author with Julia Millen of libretto for the opera, `Hypatia' (composed by Dr Stanley Friedman). Publications include "New Zealand Symphony Orchestra; The first forty years", "Bravo! the NZSO at 50" and "NZSO Youth Orchestra: fifty years and beyond". President of the New Zealand Women Writers' Society, editor of NZSO magazine Concert Pitch (1980-1987), commissioned chapter Orchestras of the world (USA, 1987), various short stories and broadcast. See New Zealand Who's Who Aotearoa (1996, p. 665). Awarded QSM in 1998.

Description: Interview with Clare Clare Galambos-Winter, born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1923. No abstract provided. Clare Galambos-Winter was a Jewish Hungarian violinist born and trained in Budapest. During World War II the family was forced from their home and into a ghetto, then interred in Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Clare's mother and brother died there, but Clare and her aunt were sent on to Kassell, to work as slave labour in a munitions factory until the war ended. The sole survivors of their family, apart from one cousin, they came to New Zealand as refugees, in 1949, joining relatives who had settled here 40 years earlier. Clare played in the 2YA radio orchestra until appointed to the National Orchestra in 1951, retiring in 1983 after 33 years in the first violin section. At the time of the interview she was 75, twice widowed, with an active musical life playing in chamber music ensembles and teaching music appreciation classes. She was a foundation member of the NZSO Alumni Association.
