Smith, Thomas Hardwick, 1830-1895

Born Isle of Man. Joined the Army (18th Regt) as an Ensign; served in Burma 1848-1854, then in India as Lieutenant. Transferred to 98th Regt of Foot 1854 at Weedon, UK. As Captain joined the 2nd West Indian Regt 1856. Promoted to Major 1858; Lt Colonel 1860. Resigned in Feb 1864, married Blanche Marie Rocke Jun 1864; sailed on the Pegasus Dec 1864 for NZ; arrived 28 Mar 1865. First son born May 1865; 10 children in all born in NZ. Later became a schoolmaster at Devonport, Te Awamutu and Huntly before his death from hepatitis. (From descendant Peter Cobb, by email, 12 Jun 2002).
