Maling, Christopher, 1843-1917

Artist and soldier. Sergeant Maling, Corp of Guides, was awarded the New Zealand Cross for gallantry at Tauranga-ika in Feb 1868. Later rose to the rank of Major. His medal is in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. He was also employed in the Department of Lands and Survey and for a time had an official position in Japan. Died in England in Feb 1917 aged 74. (An Encyclopaedia of NZ Vol 2, p663). See also `The Pioneer land surveyors of NZ / C A Lawn, p 180 (qMS-1138). 'Nineteenth century N Z artists: a guide and handbook' / Una Platts (1968) lists him as the son of Thomas Audos Maling, who was killed at Wairau in June 1843, and records that Christopher was born a few months after his father's death. He was brought to Auckland by Bishop Selwyn and brought up by Capt David Rough and his wife.

Description: View across a promontory, with the steeple of a church and low houses. In the background is are the volcanic cones of Mount Tarawera. A cultivated garden lies to the left of the church. In the foreground are groups of Maori, and there are two waka on the lake. Probably orginally from a drawing or lithograph by William Bambridge - there is a copy of this lithograph in the British Library. On the left is an inscription 'from a sketch by S. F. W', possibly S. F. Ward. The church shown was on Kariri (Galilee) Point at Lake Tarawera. It was established by Rev Seymour Mills Spencer in 1843. Spencer moved to nearby Te Wairoa in 1852. Inscriptions: Signed: C.
