The grandson of the principal Rangitaane chief at Papaioea (Palmerston North) Te Rangiotu and correspondent to Donald McLean. Married Hariata the daughter of Te Rangirurupuni, a high ranking chief of the Muaupoko tribe. Hoani was named Mua-o-te-tangata by Kingi Mahuta on account of his outstanding physical and mental qualities.
