Description: John Fry recalls being accepted for a post graduate course at Victoria University College for a diploma in social science which provided training for social workers which hadn't been available previously in New Zealand. Outlines his career which included 10 to 12 years in the Child Welfare Division of the Education Department, later becoming District Child Welfare Officer for the Whakatane area, before moving to Christchurch. Discusses John Morrison, who with his wife, were the initiators of breaking down the old orphanages and moving the children to small homes. Talks about own involvement with the Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB) Christchurch, when, in the early 1970s he was appointed community advisor by the City Council (Christchurch). Refers to two other community advisors, Peter Harwood in Auckland and David Robinson in Wellington. Recalls how shortly after their appointments they took the initiative in starting the bureraux in cities as part of the local authority structure. Refers to mayor, Mr Pickering. Describes Clary Ford and Kay Ford. Recalls that Kay was Principal of the Kingsley [Kingslea ?] Girls Centre at Burwood in Christchurch and was involved with the drawing up of the early training programme at the commencement of the CAB in Christchurch, giving assistance to Eileen Saunders and Ruth Goodland. Recalls Clary's involvement in the keeping of statistics for the Bureaux.
