Bulolo (ship)

Ship of the Burns Philp Line, launched in 1938 and used from 19 November 1938 for regular six weekly service between Australia, Papua and New Guinea ports. In October 1939 the ship began conversion for use as an armed merchant cruiser; as such she was commissioned in January 1940. In 1942 she was converted into a Landing Ship and Headquarters (LSH), later becoming a flagship for Admiral Sir Harold M. Burrough (around North Africa), and then for Rear Admiral Thomas Troubridge (around Italy). The Bulolo also assisted in evacuating Rabaul before the Japanese captured the port during WWII and she was used as a ship for Japanese surrender at Singapore in September 1945. Her Naval service terminated on December 5, 1946, and she was finally handed back to Burns Philp in 1948. Having had a comprehensive refit TSMV Bulolo resumed her original service on August 18, 1948. On all occasions TSMV Bulolo was under the command of Captain W. Wilding (Information retrieved 5 December 2012 from http://www.ssmaritime.com/MS-Bulolo.htm).
