Born in Yorkshire, and crossed from Sydney to Wellington, establishing himself as a coal merchant with large contracts with shipping conmpanies. Preferred to be known as Joe Dransfield. Became captain in the NZ Militia in 1868. Husband of Mary Dransfield (1828?-1896). Member of the Provincial Council, chairman of the Town Board, and Mayor of The City. Dransfield took the first steps towards reclamation of land from the harbour. Chairman of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce and a director of the New Zealand Steam Navigation Company.
