Ngāi Tahu. MP for Wairarapa 1975-1984. Minister of Maori Affairs and Minister of Police in the third National government. Voluntary missionary for the Mormon Church. He was also a member of the All Blacks and the New Zealand Maori rugby union team in the 1940s. Son of George Manning Couch and Hinuera (née Riwai). Married Peti (Bessie) Tangihaere (née Carter).
Former All Black 1947-1949, shearing contractor and Member of Parliament for Wairarapa 1975-1984. Minister of Maori Affairs 1978-1984 and Minister of Police 1980-1984.

- Includes nine images of George and Meri Te Whaiti's wedding in 1912.
- Also includes a series of images of George Te Whaiti dressed in Freemason's regalia (also some manuscripts material and photographic ephemera related to these images from Christopher Bede Studios Ltd dated 1959).
- Also includes two images associated with a centenary celebration, which could be the Greytown Centennial Celebrations in 1940. These include an image of George Te Whaiti dressed in a piupiu, and a group portrait taken from above of a large group of people dining in a hall. This has been photographed from above.
- Named people include: Kaihau, Hera, Kere, Agnes, Maikara, Ngaoko-i-te-rangi, Harry and John Te Whaiti. Also Patihona Kokiri, Sarah Poihipi, Bishop Bennett, Ben Couch, Ralph Hannan, E C (Neddy) Holmes and Mrs Holmes. These last four people are shown in an image of "Mr and Mrs Holmes passing the deeds of Te Hopai Farm to the Minister of Maori Affairs Hon Mr Hannan, for the Maori Education Foundation" which occurred in 1963.

Political pamphlet issued prior to the 1981 general election, focuses on the situation of the Maori population, and shows a portrait photograph of Minister of Maori Affairs Ben Couch. Above his portrait are the words: "Te hunga mate haere koutou; Te hunga ora tena koutou tena koutou, katoa". There are three scenes in this cartoon. In the top right a man and a woman are posting letters. Above the slots in the post boxes, the 10 cents price has been crossed out and 14 cents is written as the new price. In the lower left the scene is the Accident Compensation Corporation office. A sign says all claims will be subject to a 40% "user pays" tax. A man with a bandaged foot and crutches is telling the man behind the counter that it's not worth having an accident any more. In the lower right a sign in the Social Welfare office says there will be a 40% "user pays" tax on all National Superannuation. The woman behind the counter is telling a couple that the government will not mind if they emigrate to Australia.
